Lyrics
[Verse 1] Midnight rolls in heavy on the ridge
Crows keep a quiet watch along the hollow
Rust eats the iron of the crossing bridge
Gaps in the timber where no one should follow
Forty years gone since the engine died
Grandpa swore he saw the fire inside
[Pre-Chorus] Watch the black smoke crawl
Watch the evening fall
Heed the sudden stall
[Chorus] Hear that iron heart beating
Hear that iron heart beating
Silver whistle screams through the pines
The ghost of the track crossing over the lines
Spirits climbing up at the station gate
Boarding the steam of a dead man's freight
Hear that iron heart beating
[Verse 2] Latch the front doors when the air gets thin
Newcomers thinking that the wind is just a sound
Strangers arrive but they never fit in
Footprints go missing on the cold wet ground
Sometimes a shadow walks the main street strip
Waiting for the horn of a return trip
[Pre-Chorus] Keep the shutters tight
Keep the lanterns bright
Avoid the pale white light
[Chorus] Hear that iron heart beating
Hear that iron heart beating
Silver whistle screams through the pines
The ghost of the track crossing over the lines
Spirits climbing up at the station gate
Boarding the steam of a dead man's freight
Hear that iron heart beating
[Bridge] It ain't out for blood
It ain't here for sin
It’s just moving those
Who won't come back again
Left behind travelers
Waiting for the end
Calling for the ride
Coming round the bend
[Chorus] Hear that iron heart beating
Hear that iron heart beating
Silver whistle screams through the pines
The ghost of the track crossing over the lines
Spirits climbing up at the station gate
Boarding the steam of a dead man's freight
Hear that iron heart beating [Instrumental Outro]
