Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Born of the tribe, where the firelight flickered,
Where kinship was currency, the bonds ran thicker.
We bartered protection for a place in the fold,
Made warmth out of bodies when the nights turned cold.
Now the globe's compressed to a luminous pane,
Every distant catastrophe wired to the brain.
A thousand lamentations in a pocket-sized shrine,
And every fresh atrocity lays claim to your time.
The conscience expands, but the capacity fractures,
We're drowning in awareness, not equipped for the aftermath.
An ocean of anguish, a thimble of means,
The moral imperative devours what remains.
Is benevolence boundless, or bound by the flesh?
Can you nourish the world while your own roots dessicate?
There's a gulf between compassion and omnipotence, mate,
And guilt is a tyrant that don't negotiate.
[Hook]
The arithmetic of empathy, the calculus of care,
How much of our humanity can finite hands repair?
If every soul's a universe, each tragedy divine,
Then where does obligation end, and self-preservation begin?
We're condemned to see the suffering we cannot rearrange,
With a conscience built for villages, imprisoned in the range.
Is the border round our mercy an indictment of the heart,
Or the architecture keeping fractured minds from falling apart?
[Verse 2]
Geography once governed who warranted our grief,
Now distance is a fiction, but proximity's relief.
A neighbour's empty cupboard strikes a more immediate chord
Than a million nameless casualties behind a foreign border.
Is that moral inconsistency, or cognition's limitation?
A flaw in our compassion, or an ancient adaptation?
We mistake what we can witness for the sum of what is real,
Then confuse the reach of feeling with the magnitude of zeal.
Political divisions are the cartography of blame,
Different moral perimeters, each sanctifying its claim.
One extends the circle outward, one protects the inner wall,
Both insist their line is righteous while the vulnerable still fall.
And the privileged preach detachment from a citadel of plenty,
While the destitute are rationing a life that costs too many.
There's a difference between limits and convenient apathy,
Between acknowledging your weakness and absolving your complicity.
[Bridge]
I cannot be the remedy for every wound inflicted,
Nor use my own inadequacy to leave the world unafflicted.
The fact I cannot save them all does not absolve me from the few,
And the limits of my power aren't a licence to eschew
The suffering within my orbit, the injustice at my door.
You don't need omnipotence to be accountable for more.
[Verse 3]
So fuck the false dichotomy, the saint or the uncaring,
The saviour complex, self-contempt, the virtue-signalling paring.
We're finite fucking creatures in an infinite equation,
Attempting to derive a just response from our inclination.
Let mercy have a measure, but let measurement be questioned,
For a boundary drawn in wisdom can become a wall of aversion.
We may never find the formula that reconciles the whole,
But refusing every fraction leaves a deficit of soul.
[Outro]
The village grew to encompass every sorrow ever known,
Yet the heart still beats in rhythms evolution carved in bone.
Perhaps our moral greatness isn't limitless embrace,
But the courage to expand the circle without promising to save
Every life, every nation, every stranger, every name.
We cannot end all suffering. We can choose what we sustain.
