Lyrics
[Verse 1] (Him) You left the plate out on the sill
The frosting hardened overnight
(Her) I watched it crack and couldn't move
I watched it go from soft to tight
(Him) You said the candles weren't for me
(Her) I said the candles were for both
(Both) And neither of us blew them out
We let them gutter, let them smoke
[Pre-Chorus] (Him) Slow it down, slow it down
(Her) Let it come, let it come
(Him) I can wait, I can wait
(Her) Till the morning finds us numb
[Chorus] (Both) Cake for me, cake for you
Half a slice and half a truth
(Him) Cut it slow
(Her) Cut it slow
(Both) Let the evening take its time
Cake for me, cake for you
Something sweet to see us through
(Him) Take your time
(Her) Take your time
(Both) There's a whole night left to find
[Drop] (Her) Mm, mm, mm (Him) mm, mm, mm
(Her) Mm, mm, mm (Him) mm, mm, mm
(Both) Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
[Verse 2] (Her) You hum a tune I've never heard
(Him) You always hum it out of tune
(Her) The fridge is humming back at us
(Both) A little room inside a room
(Her) I count the crumbs across the cloth
(Him) I count the seconds you don't speak
(Both) And in the quiet in between
We find the thing we came to keep
[Pre-Chorus] (Her) Slow it down, slow it down
(Him) Let it come, let it come
(Her) I can wait, I can wait
(Him) Till the morning finds us numb
[Chorus] (Both) Cake for me, cake for you
Half a slice and half a truth
(Her) Cut it slow
(Him) Cut it slow
(Both) Let the evening take its time
Cake for me, cake for you
Something sweet to see us through
(Her) Take your time
(Him) Take your time
(Both) There's a whole night left to find
[Drop] (Him) Mm, mm, mm (Her) mm, mm, mm
(Him) Mm, mm, mm (Her) mm, mm, mm
(Both) Ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
[Bridge] (Her) If the sugar melts away
(Him) If the sugar melts away
(Her) Will you still be here at dawn
(Him) Will you still be here at dawn
(Her) I don't need the whole thing eaten
(Him) I don't need the whole thing gone
(Both) Just a bite to say we tried it
Just a bite to carry on
[Verse 3] (Him) The window's gone from black to blue
(Her) The kettle starts to hum its note
(Him) You wipe the counter with your sleeve
(Her) You leave a fingerprint of hope
(Both) And every crumb that we forgot
Is a little thing we chose to keep
A little sweetness on the sill
A little promise half asleep
[Final Chorus] (Both) Cake for me, cake for you
Half a slice and half a truth
(Him) Cut it slow
(Her) Cut it slow
(Both) Let the morning take its time
Cake for me, cake for you
Something sweet to see us through
(Him) Take your time
(Her) Take your time
(Both) There's a whole life left to find
[Outro] (Her) Mm, mm, mm (Him) mm, mm, mm
(Him) Mm, mm, mm (Her) mm, mm, mm
(Both) Cake for me
Cake for you
Ooh, ooh, ooh
(Mm, mm, mm)
