Lyrics

When twenty green summers had rolled to the sea

The fairy queen wondered what changes might be

She followed the swallows past heather and stone

To visit the princess she'd once left alone

The princess had once been a duck on the mere

'Til one silver spell made her human and dear

She welcomed the queen with a bright candle flame

And spoke of bold journeys and all that she'd gained

She'd crossed the wide water in weather and gale

She'd bargained with giants and outwitted a jail

She'd danced at a wedding beneath apple trees

And loved through the years with a heart wild and free

The queen said, I've wondered what magic could be

When one heart keeps faith through the years and the sea

The princess replied, there is one thing I've known

The truest enchantment is never alone

What the heart sees, the heart knows true

More than the eyes could ever view

Towed or prince and old or new

Love makes the hidden shine through

Let the old tale ring

Hey ho, love crowns everything

What the heart sees, the heart knows true

Love makes the hidden shine through

Come meet my dear prince, said the princess with pride

The one who stood faithfully close by my side

The fairy queen peered through the ivy and door

And there sat the tall she had seen years before

His warts were as proud as the stones in the wall

His crook shook the teacups, his eyes watched it all

The queen turned to ask, how can this be a prince?

Then saw how the princess looked at him

and winced

For no spell from a wand had remade his old face

No moonbeam had granted him courtly born grace

But two hands held fast and two kind eyes agreed

A love strong as oceans was all they would need

What the heart sees, the heart knows true

More than the eyes could ever view

Trod or prince and old or new

Love makes the hidden shine through

Let the old tale ring

Love crowns everything

What the heart sees, the heart knows true

Love makes the hidden shine through

The queen laid her wand on the table of oak

And laughed at the wonder their devotion spoke

My magic can alter the feather and skin

But yours is the magic that changes within

So home went the queen through the dawn's golden rain

With wisdom to carry through valley and lane

The princess and prince by the warm fire stayed

One warty old toad, one true love unafraid

What the heart sees, the heart knows true

More than the eyes could ever view

Told or prince and old or new

Love makes the hidden shine through

Hey, ho, let the old tale ring

Hey, ho, love crowns everything

What the heart sees, the heart knows true

makes the hidden shine through

Not what the eyes see beneath sun or moon

But what the heart names its own precious tune

The queen learned the secret and carried it on

Where love sees a prince, a prince has begun
