Lyrics
[Intro]
Mm-hmm
Yeah now
[Verse 1]
Daddy's old Ford had a dent in the door
We drove it past the county line
Radio played what the station would spin
Two kids with a jug of sweet tea
[Pre-Chorus]
We knew every fence post and every pine
Turned a dirt road into a state of mind
[Chorus]
Take me down the backroads
Where the gravel hums and the pine trees sway
Down the backroads
Where the creek runs cool on a summer day
I ain't looking for a highway sign
Just a little piece of what I left behind
Take me down the backroads
[Verse 2]
Mama called supper from the porch screen door
We washed the red clay off our hands
Learned how to work and I learned how to wait
On a town that never changed its plans
[Pre-Chorus]
And the years rolled by like a slow freight train
But the backroads still remember my name
[Chorus]
Take me down the backroads
Where the gravel hums and the pine trees sway
Down the backroads
Where the creek runs cool on a summer day
I ain't looking for a highway sign
Just a little piece of what I left behind
Take me down the backroads
[Bridge]
I've been chasing paychecks
Chasing city skyline views
But every mile of pavement
Leads me right back to
Leads me right back to
[Chorus]
Take me down the backroads
Where the gravel hums and the pine trees sway
Down the backroads
Where the creek runs cool on a summer day
I ain't looking for a highway sign
Just a little piece of what I left behind
Take me down the backroads
[Post-Chorus]
Oh-oh down the backroads
Yeah-eah down the backroads
[Chorus]
Take me down the backroads
Where the gravel hums and the pine trees sway
Down the backroads
Where the creek runs cool on a summer day
I ain't looking for a highway sign
Just a little piece of what I left behind
Take me down the backroads
Take me down the backroads
[Outro]
Mm-hmm
Down the backroads
Yeah now
